Fishing sinker

Artifact of the week is no. R-279, a fishing sinker used for handline fishing. This one belonged to Loftur Guðmundsson from Tjarnir and was gifted to the museum by Árni Sæmundsson. In the museum we have many examples of these along with lead line sinkers, which were also used. But this one is an „old fashioned“ stone fishing weight with a groove carved into it to keep the fishing line tightly in place. On it has also been carved the owner‘s initials, „LG“.
